Where does larimar come from?

Gemstones can often be found in different countries, right? Remarkably, larimar is found only in the Dominican Republic (especially in Los Chupaderos, which is located in the Sierra de Baoruco mountain range).

History

Larimar has only been on the market since the 1970s. This makes it one of the most recent gemstones to be discovered. Miguel Méndez is the discoverer of the stone and larimar is named after Larissa (his daughter) and the Spanish word mar, meaning 'sea'.
